Interviewing 5 Fit Trainer Kirk Long

Posted by Alex Keller on

As a local Austin company, we work with influential individuals and businesses within our community that share our vision of whole nutrition and believe in the importance of a healthy eating lifestyle.

With the New Year in place, many of us are focused on new health and fitness goals.
What better way to reset, reboot, and kickstart healthier habits, than with a juice cleanse?

We started 2016 off right by facilitating our first group cleanse of the year with 5 Fitness Training & Yoga!

5 Fit is a fitness studio focusing on 5 pillars of fitness: Strength Training, Cardiovascular Health, Flexibility, Nutrition, Recovery and Rest.

Here is an interview with trainer, Kirk Long who is leading the group cleanse at 5 Fit.

Tell us about yourself.
I have been involved with fitness in some form since I was 8. As a competitive wrestler, I learned at an early age the importance of a balanced diet and hard work to reach your goals. I lost my father at a young age to heart disease, which drove me to study nutrition and exercise physiology in college. I dedicated myself full time to personal training in 2009 and haven't looked back since!

What is your training philosophy?
I believe in a lifestyle, not diets or fads. I believe in a holistic approach to fitness and wellness. I believe in 5 pillars of fitness – resistance training, cardio, flexibility, nutrition and rest and recovery. My goal is to teach you long term sustainable goals that carry over to real life scenarios. When you work with me I want our training to help you become better at the daily activities and hobbies, whether it is hiking with the kids, gardening, running, or whatever. I believe you should base your diet on healthy vegetables, fruits and fats. Incorporate lean sources of protein and nutrient dense carbs to fuel the mind and body.

What keeps you motivated and positive daily?
This has changed many times over the years, but I will say the underlying factor in why I do what I do is my dad. He had 3 heart attacks and died when I was 14. I do what I do on the chance that I can help people live longer healthier lives. Maybe through my work, I can keep that from happening to others :)

How do you incorporate what keeps you motivated and positive into your training?
I have a huge family history with heart disease and I made up my mind a long time ago that I would do whatever I can to beat the system so to speak. Especially, once I became a dad myself 9 years ago. I want to be here for my son and I don't want something that is controllable such as heart disease to undermine that.

Thank you for leading the group cleanse challenge with us at 5 Fitness Training & Yoga!  Why is a cleanse an important experience?
I think it is important from time to time to reset your metabolism and your craving for real food. I believe that it is important to mix up the frequency amounts and variety of food we put in our body. Your body craves a state of homeostasis, balance. And as such your body can become extremely stubborn and unwilling to change. I feel that intermittent fasting, or a 3 day reset are excellent ways to insight that change.
