Effects or Protein Energy Malnutrition

Posted by MELINDA NELSON on

Protein energy malnutrition occurs when there is not enough intake of protein. This can result in effects that can last very long, especially when it comes to prenatal protein energy malnutrition.

Adult malnutrition effects

  • It causes loss of appetite which results in loss of muscle and tissue. This can make someone very thin and makes bones very visible.
  • Protein malnutrition can also cause someone to have very dry and loose skin.
  • It can cause your electrolytes to become imbalanced.
  • Protein Malnutrition can also lead to heart failure due to the lack of nutrients in the body and increased metabolic rate.

Prenatal malnutrition effects

  • Newborn may suffer altered fat distribution
  • May become born premature or smaller than normal.
  • It can also cause increased stress on the newborn.

Why is protein important?

Proteins are important because they perform several functions in the body such as growth and repairs in the body. Proteins help cells maintain their shapes. They also act as your body defense system. For expectant mothers, it is necessary to increase the protein intake considering the mother is sharing her proteins with her unborn and also will need more energy to withstand the pregnancy.

Protein-rich foods

Tofu

  1. Soybeans and Tofu: they can be used in several ways and help build muscle.
  2. Cottage cheese: this is high in protein and lower in fat. It's also high in Vitamin B12.
  3. Eggs: They are full of proteins and nutrients. Most nutrients and protein are found in the yolk but the whites are filled with protein as well.
  4. Chicken Breast: The breast contains the highest protein and the lowest fat compared to the rest of the chicken. Grilled Chicken Breast with roasted carrots, roasted beets, and roasted potatoes. Served with a kale or spinach salad. Yummy.
