Argan Oil

Argan oil is produced from the kernels of the argan tree located specifically in Morocco. The word Argan is derived from the trees original name,  Argania spinosa. There are many uses and benefits  for argan oil such as cosmetic, culinary, and environmental benefits.

Argan Tree

Argan Oil is high in Vitamin E, phenols such as vanillic acid, caffeic acid, and contains 80% unsaturated fatty acids. Argan oil contains many more vitamins and minerals also. Research has found that argan oil has the highest level of  γ-Tocopherol, which possesses strong chemopreventive and anti-inflammatory properties, than any other oil.

Cooking with Argan Oil

In cooking, argan oil is used similar to olive oil. It is used to dip breads, make dressings for salads and couscous. A popular bread dip is Amlou. It is made with crushed roasted almonds. Then it is blended/mixed with honey and argan oil. The consistency comes out sort of like peanut butter.

Due to its high Vitamin E properties, Argan oil is used in many cosmetics. The most popular uses are for shampoo and skin moisturizer.

Argan trees are very helpful for their environment. It provides fruit for its community members and animals. It's deep roots holds enough water to prevent the soils and plants around it from drying out. The argan trees canopy of leaves provide shade for nearby plants, land, and animals.

Argan Oil is mostly produced by women. Most production companies were formed by women cooperatives to ensure women could get employment to provide for their families. Having jobs and steady income also helped these women grow aware of women's rights.
